Space Shift, a solo exhibit at the New Bedford Art Museum
May - September 2019

Originally from New Bedford, painter Vanessa Irzyk constructs geometric shapes that seem to transform in space. Irzyk’s meditative and methodical painting practice offers illusions of sculptural forms on two-dimensional planes.

Working on thick watercolor paper, Irzyk modifies her canvases by cutting the surface into charismatic forms instead of the traditional rectangle. Irzyk’s playful paintings trick the eye with shifting planes and shapes that move in front and behind one another, creating visual tension. Vanessa Irzyk produces dynamic picture planes with an uncanny ability to transport viewers to a hypnotic, unusual, and pleasurable space.
